CONSIDER INVESTING IN YOURSELF

Making the decision to seek professional help sometimes takes courage and introspection. Begin this process by asking yourself some questions:

What patterns of behaviour keep you feeling stuck in your life?

Maybe you desire change in a particular life context, but find it difficult to make happen. Something is getting in the way; maybe it’s your stress, self-doubt, or fear? Maybe it’s negativity perceived or experienced from others? Whatever the barriers, you are determined to make meaningful change in your life.

How effective are your current coping skills?

Coping skills you’ve used to manage life challenges in the past may not be working that well for you now. Stress may have increased in your life, to the point that it can feel overwhelming. Sharing your concerns with friends and family might not be sufficient, adding some anxiety. At times, you might be talking yourself out of taking your desired action then feel bad about doing so. But you want to learn how to manage differently.

What do you know about yourself that helps – or hinders – your change process?

Change is a fact of life. It is not always easy and is often feared. Whatever is holding you back, often talking with an unbiased, empathetic listener can help. As you allow yourself to engage in the therapeutic conversation, an opportunity for personal growth is made possible through an expanded self-awareness. What might change? You might learn new coping strategies or relationship skills. You may act on your desired change with renewed commitment or understand yourself with greater compassion. Sometimes, when the fear of things not changing exceeds the fear of change we decide to take action. You are ready to take action toward change.
